Basic Requirements to Work in the Oil and Gas Industry
- High School Diploma or GED (requirement varies from company to company).
- Valid driver’s license (some company exceptions may apply).
- DUI convictions may affect the hiring process. The number of DUI convictions and how long ago they occurred are factors that vary by employer. It is important not to have DUI convictions in the past 3 to 5 years. DUI convictions may be a barrier to obtaining a job in the industry.
- Criminal background check. If you have felony convictions, this may be a barrier to obtaining a job in the oil and gas industry. The hiring of ex-offenders varies from employer to employer.
- Drug testing. You must be able to pass a drug test and remain drug free.
- Able to work outside in all types of weather.
- Able to work 40 to 80 hours per week (work hours vary from company to company).
- Able to work weekends and holidays.
- Some companies may require you to travel and be away from home for work.
- Some companies may require you to be on-call 24 hours.
- Able to lift 60 pounds many times per day.
